We arrived at Kampot and made our way to our hostel, a lovely set of palm leaf huts nestled against the river bank. We sat and had lunch overlooking the still waters and mangroves on the other side, read (and napped) in hammocks, swam in the river and paddled about on a makeshift paddleboard. That evening we went on a boat ride down the river into beautiful countryside and a breathtaking sunset. We even saw a tree filled with fireflies which looked like it was filled with glimmering fairies. Very romantic.
The next day we set off to Koh Rong. We arrived to a white powdery beach which we wandered along in search of a hostel, dumped our stuff and immediately when for a swim in the warm, clear water. Just a short walk down the beach and it was almost deserted so we paddled in the bath-like water and laid on the soft sand until the sun disappeared behind the trees. That evening, after a delicious barracuda and shrimp BBQ, we embarked on a bio-luminescent plankton-finding expedition. We crept along a jungle path (with no shoes and only 2 torches) until we got to the next beach around the bay. We swam out into another world. Every movement we made left a magical glowing trail of light. We spent a long time just splashing about in the glittering water. I managed to kick a sea urchin and slice my foot open but that did nothing to taint the experience. It was amazing. For the next 2 days, it rained pretty much continuously so we were very lazy. We read, napped, paddleboarded, ate the most amazing burrito ever to grace this earth, danced to impromptu live music, drank cocktails and watched a beer pong tournament.
